Support in Harmony

In Harmony is a national initiative that aims to inspire and transform the lives of children through community-based orchestral music-making.

This immersive programme improves the life chances of children and young people in the West End of Newcastle, by increasing confidence, wellbeing, resilience and educational attainment. By working in partnership, In Harmony helps build stronger communities, generating pride, hope and aspiration.

Established by Government, In Harmony is part funded by Arts Council England and the Department for Education in conjunction with individual donors, trusts and foundations. Anyone can support the programme by making a donation. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.

Cecilia McDowall Commission
This year, Professor Eric Cross completes forty years as the choir’s Musical Director.  We are most fortunate to have had the benefit of Eric’s skill and musicianship during his long and distinguished service. To celebrate this, and in Eric’s honour, the choir has been delighted to commission a short (c 10 minutes) piece from Cecilia McDowall. Many of you will be familiar with some of Cecilia McDowall’s work; we sang her “Shipping Forecast” quite a few years ago and we have also performed some of her Christmas music, most recently “There is no Rose” and “In Dulci Jubilo” in December last year. Her work is quite varied in style and we are keen to see what she will produce for this special celebration.

The cost of the commission is £5,000. The Trustees and committee have agreed that half of this sum should come from choir funds, with the other half being sought from choir members. as this is a choir commission. We hope you will want to contribute to this and to show your appreciation for all that Eric has done for us. There is no suggested amount, as we felt members should feel free to contribute as you are able.

We have set up this donation page, where you can make your donation (gift-aided as applicable). We would be delighted if you are able to donate in this way. Donations will be anonymous, except to our Treasurers.

This is an exciting year for the choir and we do hope you will be involved, in singing and giving, in this wonderful project, which will mark Eric’s remarkable service, and create a new choral work.
